What Is It?

Monel 400 is an alloy metal made up of around 67% Nickel and 23% Copper. It is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. Monel 400 portrays great characteristics such as its high strength, good weldability and its resistance to corrosion, which makes it perfect for applications in unfavourable environments.

This nickel alloy is particularly resilient to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when they are deaerated. Due to the high copper content, as expected, Monel 400 is quickly attacked by nitric acids and ammonia systems.

Where is it used?

Monel 400 Band and Buckles are popular across many marine applications and other non-oxidising chloride solutions due to its low corrosion rate in quickly flowing salt or sea water.

It is predominantly used in marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment due to its resistance in non-corrosive environments.

How to Use

Monel 400 banding and buckles are easily welded by gas tungsten, gas metal arc or shielded arc processes using the appropriate filler metals. There is no need for post weld heat treatment, however, a thorough clean after welding is critical for optimum corrosion resistance, if not, this could lead to the risk of contamination. Completed fabrications can be produced to an extensive range of mechanical properties when proper control of the amount of hot or cold working and the selection of the appropriate thermals is done.
